“Self-cleaning” is one of the most common features advertised on countertop ice makers — and one of the most misunderstood. It sounds like the machine cleans itself so you never have to. It doesn’t. Here’s what a self-cleaning ice maker actually does, how it differs from manual cleaning, and whether the feature is worth paying extra for.

What “self-cleaning” really means

A self-cleaning ice maker has a button that runs an automated circulation cycle. When you add a cleaning solution (water with vinegar or citric acid) to the reservoir and press the button, the machine pumps that solution through its internal water pathways — the pump, tubing, and over the freezing element — and then drains. It automates the circulation part of descaling.

What it does not do is physically scrub anything. It can’t reach into corners, wipe the ice basket, or remove the biofilm that grows on surfaces the water doesn’t forcefully flow over. You still add the cleaning solution, and you still wipe the interior by hand.

Manual cleaning: what you do yourself

On a machine without the feature, you do the same job manually:

1. Drain the reservoir
2. Add a vinegar or citric-acid solution
3. Run a normal ice cycle (discarding the ice) to circulate it
4. Drain, then wipe and brush the interior, basket, and nozzles
5. Run plain-water cycles to rinse
6. Air dry

Is the self-cleaning feature worth it?

Yes, modestly. The feature is genuinely convenient — pressing a button to circulate solution is easier than babysitting a manual cycle, and it ensures the internal pathways get a thorough flush. If two machines are otherwise equal and one has self-clean, take it.

But don’t overpay for it, and never let it lull you into skipping the manual wipe-down. The biofilm that causes bad-tasting ice grows on surfaces the button can’t reach. A self-cleaning machine that’s never wiped will still develop slime and odor. The feature saves a few minutes; it doesn’t replace real cleaning.
